Salentinian handicrafts have preserved their traditions. Many small shops offer artifacts that skiful masters have realisedusing poor materials such as paper-machè, stone, wood, pottery, as were used in the past.

Salento is also the land of “ Remorse”, of “pizzica-pizzica” and “tarantate”. Tradition has it that a spider (taranta) bit the peasant girls engaged in reaping the harvest. Its poison caused them stabbing pains and agitation that could only be healed by the music of tambourines and violins. Such music succeded in soothing down the “tarantate”, by making them dance incessantly for days. Many religious and popular festivities are connected to this tradition.
